Procedure: Regularly inspect the impeller shroud during downtime. Carefully observe the shroud surface for signs of wear using the naked eye or a simple magnifying glass. Record the location, shape, and extent of the wear.
Diagnostic Basis: Preliminary assessment of the wear type is based on the typical appearance characteristics of different wear patterns. For example, if numerous random scratches are observed on the shroud surface, abrasive wear can be preliminarily identified; rust spots or pitting indicate corrosive wear.

Ultrasonic Testing
Principle: Ultrasonic testing utilizes the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves in different media. When ultrasonic waves encounter defects or material changes, they reflect, refract, and attenuate. The reflected ultrasonic signal is analyzed to detect internal damage within the impeller shroud.
Procedure: Apply an appropriate amount of coupling agent to the impeller shroud surface. Place the ultrasonic probe firmly against the shroud surface and slowly move the probe for a comprehensive inspection. Observe the waveform changes on the ultrasonic detector to analyze for any abnormal reflected signals. Diagnostic Basis: If an abnormally high reflection signal is detected, it may indicate internal defects such as cracks or cavities. The cause of the fault can be further analyzed based on the wear morphology. For example, cavitation wear may cause microcracks within the impeller shroud, which can be detected using ultrasonic testing.
Magnetic Particle Testing
Principle: For impeller shrouds made of ferromagnetic materials, surface or near-surface defects cause distortion of magnetic flux lines. After applying magnetic powder, the particles accumulate at the defects, revealing the defect’s location and shape.
Procedure: First, magnetize the impeller shroud, then spray a magnetic powder suspension on its surface. Observe the magnetic powder accumulation and record the defect’s location and shape.
Diagnostic Basis: Areas where magnetic powder accumulates may indicate defects such as cracks. If magnetic powder accumulation is found in areas of severe erosion wear, it may be due to erosion-induced crack propagation, requiring further assessment of the fault’s severity.

Flow Rate and Head Testing
Procedure: While the equipment is operating normally, use a flow sensor and pressure sensor to measure the equipment’s flow rate and head, respectively. Compare the measured values with the equipment’s rated specifications. Diagnostic Basis: Severe impeller shroud wear reduces the effective flow area of the impeller, impacting fluid conveying capacity and leading to reduced flow and head. For example, abrasive wear, cavitation wear, and other factors can cause uneven shroud surfaces or material loss, which can reduce flow and head. This can be used to determine the extent of the impact of impeller shroud wear on equipment performance. - Vibration TestingPrinciple: Impeller shroud wear leads to uneven impeller mass distribution, generating unbalanced forces during rotation and causing equipment vibration. By monitoring vibration parameters such as frequency and amplitude, the operating status of the impeller can be determined.Procedure: Install vibration sensors at key equipment locations (such as the bearing seat and pump casing) to monitor the vibration signals during operation in real time. Analyze the collected signals using a vibration analyzer.Diagnostic Basis: If the vibration amplitude increases significantly and the vibration frequency correlates with the impeller’s rotational frequency, impeller shroud wear may be causing increased imbalance. Further inspection of the impeller shroud wear is necessary to determine the root cause of the problem.
