Material Selection and Preparation
Selecting the appropriate material is the first step in the heat treatment process. Jaw plates are typically made of high-manganese steel, alloy steel, or other wear-resistant materials. Upon arrival, the material undergoes rigorous inspection to ensure it is free of defects, impurities, and cracks.
Processing and Shaping
The material is initially formed through processes such as cutting and welding. During processing, dimensional accuracy and shape must be maintained to meet design requirements. After forming, the jaw plate undergoes stress relief annealing to eliminate internal stresses induced during processing.
Preheating
The jaw plate requires preheating before quenching to reduce thermal stress and deformation during the heat treatment process. Quenching
Quenching is a key step in the heat treatment of jaw plates, aiming to improve the material’s hardness and wear resistance. After heating the jaw plate to an appropriate temperature (typically 850-1050°C), it is rapidly immersed in a quenching medium (such as water or oil). The choice of quenching medium depends on the material’s characteristics and the desired hardness. After quenching, a martensite structure forms on the jaw plate’s surface, significantly increasing its hardness.
Tempering
Although the quenched jaw plate has high hardness, it lacks toughness and is prone to fracture. Therefore, tempering is necessary. The tempering temperature is generally lower than the quenching temperature, typically between 200-600°C. During the tempering process, internal stresses in the material are released, achieving a balance between hardness and toughness, and achieving good overall mechanical properties.
Cooling and Cleaning
The tempered jaw plate should be slowly cooled to room temperature to prevent the induction of new stresses due to rapid temperature changes. After cooling, the jaw plate surface may contain residual scale and quenching media, requiring cleaning to ensure surface quality.
Finishing and Inspection
The heat-treated jaw plate requires finishing to achieve the final size and shape requirements. After finishing, the jaw plate should undergo hardness testing, metallographic analysis, and nondestructive testing to ensure its performance meets design standards.
Surface Treatment
To further enhance the wear and corrosion resistance of the jaw plate, surface treatments such as shot peening, plating, or coating with wear-resistant materials can be performed.
